The CIRES Outstanding Performance Awards (OPAs) recognize projects or activities that are novel, high-impact, and show remarkable creativity or resourcefulness. In collaboration with the CIRES Members’ Council (CMC), the OPAs are peer-nominated and reviewed; winners are announced during the annual Rendezvous meeting held in May. You can use the form below to make a Nomination.
Starting in 2006, these awards were separated into two distinct categories: *Science and Engineering Awards* and *Service Awards*, recognizing CIRES members for their outstanding contributions to scientific research or engineering work, and for outstanding service in project management, communications, outreach, or other work not directly related to scientific research or engineering. As of 2023, *Service Awards* has been modified to *Science Service Awards* and a third category has been added: *Administrative Service Awards*, recognizing CIRES members for outstanding service in administration, information technology, facilities and equipment maintenance, system administrators, finance, diversity equity and inclusion (DEI), or human resources (HR).
CIRES annually solicits nominations, from any colleague or associate of a CIRES employee, for outstanding performance by an individual or team during the previous year. These nominations are reviewed by a sub-committee of the CIRES Members' Council (CMC), referred to as the CMC Outstanding Performance Award (OPA) Committee. The Science and Engineering Award recognizes a CIRES member or team for outstanding contributions to scientific research or engineering work; the Science Service Award recognizes a CIRES member or team for outstanding service in support of science and engineering; and the Administrative Service Award recognizes a CIRES member or team for outstanding service in administration, information technology, facilities and equipment maintenance, system administrators, finance, diversity equity and inclusion (DEI), or human resources (HR).
In evaluating the nominations, careful attention is given to each candidate's eligibility and fulfillment of the award criteria described below. The CMC OPA Committee presents their top recommendations to the CIRES Director for final approval. The CIRES Director makes the final determination of the number of awards to be given.
Awardees receive monetary awards, certificates and their names are engraved on CIRES Outstanding Performance Award plaques that hang in CIRES buildings. Typical award amounts are $2,000 for each award, divided equally among team members.
All regular permanent CIRES employees are eligible. Students who are part of a larger team effort are also eligible. All CIRES Fellows, visiting scientists and senior management are not eligible.
At the time of the nomination deadline, nominees (except students) must be active CIRES employees for both individual and team awards. To receive an OPA award, the nominee must also still be a CIRES employee at the time of the CIRES Rendezvous. Student nominees must be currently enrolled or have graduated no earlier than one academic year prior to the nomination.
Nominators are encouraged to reach out to supporters prior to nomination to ensure the appropriate number of support letters will be received on time. The requested support letters will be submitted by the references directly to the OPA Committee via the online submittal system.
Please note that a nomination cannot be modified once submitted.

An Administrative Service award nominee does not have to be in CIRES administration, so long as the work being recognized is administrative. For instance, nominees might be measurement staff at the Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) who maintain and improve lab operations and design non-scientific software to help with analysis workflows.
Examples of Administrative Services may be associated with these departments: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Finance, Human Resources, Travel, Operations, Laboratory and Building Maintenance, Information Technology, and Message Centers.
Award Criteria: The Administrative Service category includes any work that facilitates, supports, or promotes CIRES work and operations. The three criteria used to evaluate each administrative service award nomination are the following:
Note: Projects in the Administrative Service category often significantly impact the CIRES community. Nominees show perseverance, loyalty, and commitment to CIRES and its mission by overcoming obstacles in achieving success. Please include in the nomination examples of such qualities, letters of support, or supplemental material that may aid the committee in appreciating the value of the administrative service(s) provided.
